Buyer Guide for Choosing the Right AC Unit for Home

An air conditioning unit is a necessity to combat the increase in temperature heralded by the change in season. Many a homeowners have started to look for an AC for their home. The presence of myriad of big names like Samsung offering an array of model makes this search a cumbersome affair. There are certain things that can be helpful for a homeowner looking to buy an AC.

The air conditioner types

There are following two types of air conditioners for a homeowner to choose from

  • Window AC
  • Split AC

Window AC

This is a single chassis AC that’s mounted on the wall or window. It’s a cheaper air cooling solution that’s easier to install. It’s available in the capacities of 0.8 to 2 ton. Compared to a split AC, it’s noisier and is limited in size. It’s also limited to the energy rating of maximum 3 stars.

Split AC

It consists of two units that are connected by using pipes for the movement of refrigerant fluid. The external unit makes the noise while the inner unit doesn’t thereby allow you to enjoy the cooling with minimal noise. It only requires a small size duct to allow the pipe connection that’s covered by the installation of the AC unit. This makes aesthetically superior to a window AC.

It allows you to use multiple interior units connected to a single external unit. They come with a maximum power rating of five stars and are available in higher tonnage. These are more expensive as compared to a window AC with higher installation costs.

The AC tonnage

The tonnage of an AC determines its cooling capacity, so it’s an important part of choosing an AC. A lower tonnage AC will take longer to cool a space and maintaining the cooling as compared to a higher tonnage AC. So, lower tonnage results in higher wait time and power bills whereas excess tonnage will result in unnecessary expenses. The necessary tonnage is determined on the basis of following factors

  • Room size.
  • Average outside temperature during peak summer time.
  • The average number of people that use the room at a given time.
  • Exposure to direct sunlight.
  • Presence of a room above the target area.

Usually, the tonnage is calculated by dividing the square root of the product of room length and breadth by 10.

Type of compressor

There are following two compressor types

  • Scroll compressor
  • Rotary compressor

Rotary compressor is a better choice for a home AC.

Energy rating

Nowadays all the leading brands like Samsung offer their air conditioner with an energy rating by BEE. The rating ranges from 1 to 5 stars. The higher energy rating indicates lower energy consumption. Within the same energy rating, an AC with a higher energy efficiency ratio or EER indicates better energy saving capability.

Air purifiers

Nowadays, many of the ACs have inbuilt air purifiers. This feature prevents the air within the room getting stale and restricts germ buildup.

Maintenance of an AC is another thing that needs to be considered. An AC with an inbuilt filter cleaner feature makes the maintenance easier. Clean air filter also ensures better cooling and minimal power consumption. Also, make sure the external unit is easily accessible and devoid of clutter in its vicinity. A comparison website like compareraja.in can be instrumental in comparing different AC models in terms of their features and prices.
